How the Math Works.
The Amazon side takes your selling price and applies your category's referral percentage from Amazon's published US fee schedule, as of July 2026. The own-site side applies a typical card processing rate of 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction. Your fulfillment cost is subtracted on both sides, because you ship the order whichever checkout it comes through.
The yearly figure multiplies the per-sale fee gap by your monthly units, twelve times. It deliberately leaves out FBA storage, advertising, and returns on one side, and hosting, apps, and traffic-building on the other: those vary too much by business to fake a universal number, and this tool would rather be honest than precise-looking. What it shows cleanly is the structural difference: a marketplace charges a percentage for the demand it owns, and a site you own does not.
Fee schedules change. We review these rates every few months, and the "as of" date above tells you exactly how fresh they are.
Fair Questions
About Amazon Fees and This Calculator.
How Much Does Amazon Take per Sale?
Between 8 and 17% of the sale price for most categories, taken as a referral fee, with 15% being the standard rate. Clothing runs 17%, Consumer Electronics 8%. FBA fulfillment and storage fees come on top if Amazon ships for you. The calculator above applies your category's exact rate.
How Is This Different From an FBA Calculator?
An FBA calculator tells you your profit on Amazon. This one shows the comparison: the same sale through Amazon and through a checkout you own, side by side. The difference is the referral fee versus a payment processing fee, and that gap is what the calculator puts a yearly number on.
Where Do the Fee Numbers Come From?
Referral percentages come from Amazon's published US fee schedule as of July 2026, simplified to each category's most common rate. The own-site side uses a typical card processing rate of 2.9% plus 30 cents. Both change over time, so treat the output as a close estimate, not an invoice.
Does It Include FBA Fulfillment Fees?
You enter your own fulfillment cost per unit, and the calculator applies it to both sides. That is deliberate: you still pick, pack, and ship whichever checkout the order comes through, so fulfillment mostly cancels out. The gap that remains is the fee gap, and that is the honest comparison.
Is Selling on Your Own Website More Profitable Than Amazon?
Per sale, usually yes: referral fees run 8 to 17% while card processing runs about 3%. But Amazon brings the demand, and your own site needs traffic of its own, so the honest model is both: Amazon keeps selling while every direct order keeps the margin, the customer, and the data.
The Bigger Picture.
The calculator hands you one number, and a number is only useful with a map behind it. These four pages are the map: what the platform holds, the model, and the library that walks you through it.
You Have Seen the Gap. Now See the Move.
The calculator shows what every sale hands over. The Push Roadmap shows what to do about it: a free 12 page PDF that maps the move from renting sales to owning a brand, with the Ownership Scorecard inside.
